8 interior design trends to know in 2021
What will 2021 hold for our interiors? Which new design trends will define our homes and our moods?
From cottagecore to bathleisure, the design trends set to grace glossy magazines and Pinterest boards in the year to come, are focused on making us feel good. It seems we all want spaces with the power to relax, comfort and inspire us.
Whether you’re committing to a complete redesign in 2021, or are craving a few minor updates to make a place feel more your own, find your happy place amongst the interior design trends below…
Multifunctional spaces
The events of 2020 forced us to embrace multi-functional living. We ate, slept, worked, played, chilled and worked out all within the same four walls!
As a result, many of us will look to make our spaces smarter in 2021. We’ll see rooms redesigned to be more versatile, fitting with a WFH lifestyle that looks set to stay.
There’ll be stylish, clever storage — like ottomans and foldaway desks. Better defined areas or zones within the same room. And a focus on functional design that better complements our “new normal” way of living.
Cottagecore
Head on to the ‘gram and you’ll find #cottagecore is trending beyond belief. It seems many of us are craving a simpler, slower, more rural kind of life.
Cottagecore aims to bring nostalgia, whimsy, and serious levels of comfort to our homes. We’ll see lots of texture and pattern, reclaimed wooden furniture, natural fabrics and floral prints.
Cottagecore has some similarities to the hygge trend that’s enjoyed huge popularity over recent years. But where hygge embraces comfort and minimalism, cottagecore is not averse to a splash of color and a shelf of perfectly curated clutter.
This cottagey, comfortable and very characterful look is set to take 2021 by storm.
Traditional with a twist
Classic floral wallpaper no longer screams “Grandma!” In 2021, it’s set to stage something of a comeback.
Along with chintzy prints and embroidered details, floral walls (and even ceilings!) are back. And they’re creating an explosion of color and pattern. If you’ve seen The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix, then you’ll know what we mean.
But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a full-on nostalgia-fest. This look doesn’t just hark back to a time gone by. A respect for the traditional is met with a decidedly modern twist.
Expect mid-century modern furniture. Luxurious velvet sofas. And fresh color schemes that bring this trend bang up-to-date.
Mindfulness décor
In 2021, some will embrace the comfort of clutter. Others will find their Zen by moving even further towards minimalism.
In a departure from the pattern heavy-trends above, mindfulness décor is set to be another popular interior fashion for the coming year.
Spaces will be designed with a focus on mental wellbeing. We’ll see uber-minimalistic rooms, free from clutter and focused purely on the essentials. We’re talking natural light, lots of houseplants and calming color schemes.
For many of us, 2021 will be a year to really strip things back — creating a clean and balanced energy within our homes.
Minimalistic art
Face line graphic art was a really popular trend for millennials in 2020. And it looks set to continue in the New Year — with one key difference.
In 2021, the look will make its way out of the frame. We’ll see those distinctive line drawings on wallpaper, home accessories and even on cabinet doors.
Calm but quirky, this look brings interest to a minimalistic space. And it’s an easy trend to achieve yourself if you have an artistic eye and a steady hand!
Earth schemes and neutral colors
Dulux has announced “Brave Ground” as its color of the year. This neutral, muted brown shade will set the scene for color schemes in 2021.
Earthy tones are grounding and restorative. We can expect tranquil desert shades — like terracotta, sand and beige — along with paler nudes.
We love how warm, understated and soothing these tones feel. But also how well they lend themselves to chic and contemporary design. They pair particularly well with splashes of gold.
And they’re sure to bring personality and depth to any room in the house.
Bathleisure
Nothing beats a day of spa indulgence. That’s why many of us will try to incorporate the style and ethos of wellness centers into our homes this coming year.
Bathrooms will become multi-functional spaces that soothe, uplift and promote self-care. Surfaces will be tactile and luxurious. Plants and other natural elements will create a sense of calm and health.
These once purely practical rooms will become a refuge — a place to pamper and to linger.
Sustainable living
Sustainability continues to rise up the interior design agenda. And we’re all becoming more conscious of the buying decisions we make.
2021 will be a year of sustainable, recycled and reclaimed materials. We’ll see more upcycling and repurposing of furniture. And we’ll be buying timeless pieces that are built to last.
When it comes to big redesigns, we’ll be looking to maximize natural light and find solutions that use energy and materials in the most sustainable ways possible.
You can see this approach in many of the design trends listed above: a craving for nature, a “less is more” ethos, and a willingness to embrace preloved furnishings.
Sustainability will run through all of our interior trends, in 2021 and beyond.
